Painter in gouache and watercolour, muralist and teacher, born in London. He early wanted to be a painter and from 16 enrolled in art school at Battersea Polytechnic. Aged 19 he was given a solo show by Wertheim Gallery, then for several years Lucy Wertheim took most of his work and paid him £2 a week. Gommon came into contact with the theatre and continued his programme of self-education in the arts, which remained a passion. Living in Dorset his attachment with the romantic English landscape – a strong element in his work – was begun. Disillusioned with art on his return to London and aware of social unrest and deprivation, Gommon largely gave up painting. After a period in London Fire Service in World War II Gommon taught at a progressive school in Kent, then from 1946–77 taught art at Northampton Grammar School.
