Sculptor of animals and birds in laminated wood, often large and occasionally with added colour, draughtsman and teacher, born in Ditchling, Sussex. He attended Brighton College of Art, 1958–62, and Slade School of Fine Art, 1962–4. He taught at Brighton Polytechnic, 1976–7 and 1981–2; during the intervening period, in 1977–9, Johnson lectured at the University of Benin, Nigeria, travelling around that country, Ivory Coast and Mali to see ethnic culture and art, the wooden sculptures of the Yoruba and Ibo tribes and bronze figures of Ife. Exhibitions included Gardner Centre, University of Sussex, 1982, RA Summer Exhibition, 1983, and Kenyatta University, Nairobi, Kenya, 1988. He showed with Browse & Darby from 1982.
