Painter and linguist, correct name Isobel Françoise Rodmell, born in Alsace, who was educated at Belfort, France. She began painting at 15, abandoned it at 18 and only resumed 20 years later when living in England. As she was married, there was no financial need to paint, but she liked to convey a personal gaiety and vivacity to her canvases, which were often of children, doll-like with large eyes. Took part in mixed shows at Arcade Gallery, 1954–5, and Chiltern Gallery, 1962, and had a solo exhibition at AIA Gallery in 1950. Rodmell was taken up by the dealer Lucy Wertheim, who opened Rodmell’s solo exhibition at The Hotel Alexandra, Hove, in 1965, near where the artist lived in Russell Square, Brighton, Sussex. Pictures by Rodmell were included in Modern English Paintings from the Wertheim Collection, at Worthing Art Gallery, 1958; in The Wertheim Collection, at Hove Museum and Art Gallery, 1960; and in Naïve Paintings from the Wertheim Collection, Art To-Day Gallery, Shoreham-by-Sea, 1962.
