This painting won the first prize for painting in the Penwith Society's Festival of Britain competition in 1951. Barns-Graham received received £75 prize money. The judges for the prize were John Rothenstein, Director of the Tate Gallery, Philip James Director of the Art Department of the Arts Council of GB and ex-Mayor Alderman Garold Cock. The selection committee drove 15 miles to look at the view of Porthleven that was the artist's point of inspiration. (W. Barns-Graham 'A Studio Life' by Lynne Green, page 125, Lund Humphries 2001)
