David Lindsay was born in 1871 in Dunecht, Aberdeenshire. He was the eldest son of James Lindsay, 26th Earl of Crawford, and Emily Florence, the daughter of Colonel the Honourable Edward Bootle-Wilbraham. The family seat was at Haigh Hall, Wigan, which the Lindsays had acquired through marriage in 1780. He became MP for Chorley in 1895 and was known as an art connoisseur. He held several political offices including Junior Lord of the Treasury from 1903 to 1905 and Minister for Transport in 1922. He entered the House of Lords in 1913, when he became the 27th Earl of Crawford after the death of his father. Apart from his political career, he was Chancellor of the University of Manchester from 1922 to 1940 and a trustee of the National Portrait Gallery.
