The painting was commissioned in 1842 by the Junior United Service Club, London (1827–1929), which was a private members club for commissioned officers of the Navy, Army, Marines, Royal Indian Forces, and Regular Militia, Lieutenants of Counties, sub-lieutenants in the Army and midshipmen in the Navy. Exhibited at the Royal Academy, London (1844). After the closure of the Club the painting was sold to the Royal Navy where it was hung at HMS St Vincent (1927–1969), an on shore training establishment in Gosport. The painting along with an accompanying portrait of HM Queen Victoria have been loaned to the Hall since 1973.
