'A winter congregation at the Red-River Settlement', according to letterpress in Illustrations of missionary scenes, an offering to youth, published in Mainz by Joseph Scholz, which includes a lithograph of this composition. Various catalogues attribute the work to Joseph Josenhans (1812–1884) and date it to the 1850s The Red River Settlement covered territories in the Canadian provinces of Manitoba and Saskatchewan, and northern Minnesota.
