The panel was cut vertically in two to form the wings of a triptych. With the wings open, the Evangelists (on the left Matthew, Luke; on the right John, Mark) on the reverse would face in towards a central panel, now missing. These figures, shown half length, and The Annunciation on the obverse side of the wings, are inscribed in Greek and are presented in traditional Byzantine iconography combined with a somewhat Italianate style.
