In 2006 Li was commissioned by Autograph to create a new series of work marking the 50th anniversary of 'The Lonely Londoners', Sam Selvon's classic novel of West Indian immigrant life in the 1950s. This photograph is from the series of photographs, 'Press The * then Say Hello', which he made in response to the commission. Working with customers of high street internet phone shops in Manchester, the portraits depict local people making phone calls to their family and friends abroad. At the time Li made this series, these phone booth shops would have been the only way people could speak with their loved ones before smartphones and the internet were easily accessible. By capturing each caller's body language, he reveals an interesting interplay between closeness and distance where their bodies are in one space and their minds elsewhere.
