More about

Canterbury Cathedral is part of the Canterbury UNESCO World Heritage Site and was the first cathedral founded in England, in the year 597. It is a working church, being the seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Mother Church of the worldwide Anglican Communion. Since the murder of St Thomas Becket in 1170, it has been a major pilgrimage destination. As well as being a masterpiece of architecture, Canterbury Cathedral is home to a rich collection of stained glass, sculpture, church silver, historic textiles and paintings. Some of this collection can be enjoyed within the cathedral itself; there are also three display areas which showcase selected objects. In addition, there is a historic library and a remarkable archive collection which are open for research.
