Wycombe Museum is known internationally for its chair collection, chair making being the most significant industry in the Wycombe District in the 19th and much of the 20th centuries. However, our visitors also come to see other aspects of local history and, of course, the art collection. Much of the art has been collected for local history interest reasons including, as it does, many local views (such as 'St Michael's Church at Hughenden Manor Estate, Buckinghamshire, Showing Disraeli's Grave'), portraits of local dignitaries (such as James Oliff Griffiths, benefactor to High Wycombe Library) and other work by local artists (such as George Henry Grenville Manton’s 'Isabella and the Pot of Basil'). However, some of the oil paintings are of wider than local interest due to the significance of the artist, such as Joshua Reynolds’ portrait 'William, 2nd Earl of Shelbourne' (1782), and ‘Saint Paul Preaching to the Ancient Britons’ by John Hamilton Mortimer. In addition to our permanent displays, the Museum hosts a program of regularly changing temporary art exhibitions.
