Anna Maria Crouch was a celebrated actress and opera singer in eighteenth century London, renowned for her fine soprano voice and comedic acting. Throughout her career she worked principally at Drury Lane theatre, playing many lead roles in fashionable plays and operas. This portrait was painted at the height of her career in 1787. Set beneath a rocky cliff with the sea in the distance, Anna puts aside her book and sits lost in thought, gazing longingly. The portrait miniature hung around her neck, the chain of which she fiddles with anxiously, reveals the subject of her contemplation. Her husband Edward Rollings Crouch (d.1847) was a young naval lieutenant. In the background, his ship sails towards the horizon. Despite the portrait's deeply personal and emotional nature, Edward Crouch never collected or paid for his commissioned work from Romney’s studio.
