Dame Annie Maud Burnett was elected to Tynemouth Council in 1910; she was the first woman to hold that position not only in Tynemouth but the north of England. She was made a Dame in 1918 for her services during the First World War as President of the Tynemouth War Savings Association. She later became the first female Mayor of Tynemouth, serving two terms in 1928–1930. There is a Blue Plaque on her house in Priors Terrace, Tynemouth, where she lived all her life.

The 'Shields Daily News', of 17th February 1931, records that she was honoured through the presentation to the borough of a life-sized portrait of her by Frank Eastman. The presentation ceremony took place in the courtroom of the town hall.
