This / lead to Essex becoming a / hotbed of supposed 'witchcraft' / activity and many women being / killed for being 'witches'.; side 2: In Chelmsford witch / trials used to take place / in the town assizes, / which once stood in front / of where the Shire Hall stands / today. The gallows stood on / Primrose Hill.; side 3: In 1565 Elizabeth / Lowys from Great / Waltham was the first / person in England to be / hanged for witchcraft.; side 4: Between 1644 and 1647 / Matthew Hopkins became / a self appointed Witchfinder / General. Torturing and / sending more women to their / deaths than all other 'witch' / hunters in the previous 160 years.
