This is a painting of Frank Spencer, who was the dancing partner and husband of Peggy Spencer. They formed one of the most successful ballroom dancing partnerships in the country, winning many competitions and awards. Both he and Peggy were presented with MBEs in 1977. After their retirement from professional dancing they taught dancing from their ballroom in Penge, the Royston Ballroom. Gilbert Tomes, the artist who painted this picture, was better known for his work as a scientist, especially his involvement with the early development of television technology and for co-founding the 20th Century Electronics Company in the 1940s.
