A Roman sculpture of a man wearing a toga. The right arm and head are not original to the body of the sculpture and the hands are missing. The head is thought to depict Menander (the Greek dramatist). The marrying of the different parts of the sculpture probably occurred in Italy before it was acquired for Chiswick House. This sculpture, together with 88003179 and 88003181 were positioned in the Exedra in Chiswick's gardens – they are shown in this location in a pen and ink sketch by William Kent from c.1736. Roman, over-size grey veined marble statue. One of three given to Lord Burlington in the early 1720s. White marble Roman heads were added (1722–1734) by the Italian restorer Giovanni Battista Guelfi. The head has suffered damage to the hair and face and the nose is missing, but it is identifiable as the Greek dramatist Menander.
